Skills for Industry offers training to provide businesses with the necessary fundamental skills in ICT to improve business performance. Topics include getting started with your PC, Internet and Email Skills, using OneDrive and Office Online, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
This course leads to a nationally recognized qualification - Essential Digital Literacy Skills - level 1.
This is a 10-day course running 1 day per week from 9:30 am - 4:30 pm.
Training is hands-on and tutor-led.
We provide comprehensive training manual for each topic.

IT Fundamentals and Windows
This course gives a basic introduction to using a digital device - such as a PC and the programmes (apps) that you can use for business. This course covers Microsoft Windows - how to manage the look of your PC, set up an effective filing system for your work and find files that you have created. Delegates will be able to perform routine ''troubleshooting'' to rectify common problems.
These sessions cover the basic concepts of Word. You will learn how to create, save, edit and print simple documents. You will use text proofing tools including spell check. The course covers line, paragraph and page formatting features, such as margins, justification, spacing, typefaces, colour and page numbering. Other topics include tabs and indentation, drawing and tables.
The tutor will explain what you need to connect to the internet and surf the Net. Delegates will be shown how to browse the web and use web addresses, how to go to particular websites and setting up a preferred home page. The tutor will explain the many uses of search engines in navigating the web and finding relevant sites for research. We will also discuss the reliability of information found on website and assess its accuracy.
This course details how to set up e-mail, creating, sending and reading/replying to mail using web based email services.
Delegates will learn how to work effectively as a ''digital team'' sharing information and collaborating using collaborative tools (apps).
Delegates will be able to define ''Data Security'' and understand the need for keeping their business data secure. Delegates will be able to assess the risks for their own business or homes and identify real-life security problems. As a result of the knowledge delegates can develop a strategy to prevent such problems having a negative impact on their business or home usage.
This course covers the basic concepts of Excel and its business uses. The essentials of designing, building and editing a spreadsheet, correcting mistakes, cut, copy and paste, using formulae and functions and charting are covered, as is the ability to print and output information.
Users will be taken step-by-step through the process of creating a professional standard slideshow presentation using a variety of media including video, audio, colour and hyperlinks.
Controlled Task and Structured Discussion
Delegates will undertake a practical assignment to show how they would apply the skills they have learnt on the course. Delegates will also participate in a structured discussion based on the topics covered on the course.
To gain the maximum benefit from this course, an attendee should have a basic knowledge of Windows and be able to use the mouse.
Delegates must be employed and live / work in a qualifying area to be eligible for Skills for Industry funding.
